Every inmate in the Arkansas Department of Corrections has a commissary fund. The amounts in the fund are used to purchase necessary hygiene items (shampoo, soap, deodorant, tooth paste, tooth brush), additional clothing items (boots, winter gloves, work gloves, socks, underwear, thermal clothes), food items (coffee, wheat bread, V8 juice, soda, vitamins, nuts, granola bars, snacks, ice cream, ramen noodles) and things like stamped envelopes, paper and other writing supplies. These are all items that are taken for granted every day but make a huge difference in the quality of life for an inmate. It wasn't until recently that the ADC allowed so many items to be purchased. Heath is considering taking some educational correspondence classes designed for inmates from an accredited university. Funds donated to his commissary account could be also be used for these classes. This would help him to gain skills necessary for him to become gainfully employed should he be granted clemency at a point in time.
