Hello, my name is Nancy
and I first wrote to Heath in September 2003 and since that time he and I have become good friends.
Heath's wife Kathie also oversees the web site and assists in all efforts to get Heath's message out to those who can benefit from his story.
My husband & I visit with Heath as often as we can.
Heath has a wonderful personality, he cares deeply about others and does all he can to relate to others pain and to help them.
With the help of God and his faith, Heath has been able to overcome the effects of most of the abuse even in the prison environment.
Of course, Heath also has moments when he feels so much loss, he can never give back what was taken, and just a brokeness from being apart from those that love him.
Anyone that has been abused for long periods can appreciate the effort and strength it's taken for Heath to sort through his life and find answers not only for himself, but to help others as well.
Heath humbly and shares his faith in God with inmates and with the many people that write to him.
My life has also been personally touched by child sexual abuse. My two best friends while growing up were abused by their fathers
and I never knew or suspected it at the time. We were just 'normal' kids growing up right?
It was such a deep, dark secret in both families and even to their best friend. They were afraid that if
I knew the real story, that I would abandon them like everyone else in their life had. As we grew up I saw the suffering
and their lives slowly fall apart without knowing the real cause.
(Many of Heath's friends were probably a witness to such events as well.)
When we were older and their stories eventually came out,
the puzzle of their lives finally started to make sense. I was an unknowing witness to certain events
(I stayed at their houses overnight like all girls do) and could testify that
these were not false memories or anything of the sort. This was the real story, the ugly, nasty side of humanity that
does exist everyday, in normal looking houses.
Their fathers hid their dirty secrets and actions even though I was sleeping in the same room!
The threats these fathers made to protect themseleves were beyond gross and more of a reality to my friends than waking up every morning.
The other reality for them was that once they found the courage to
tell someone about the abuse, they could take no legal action against their fathers, the statute of limitations
had run out. The father of one of my friends died many years ago at the age of 45 and is no longer a threat to any little girl.
The other lives a life of fear that it will happen again to any little girl left for just a few minutes in her fathers
presence alone (her family still denies it happened). The true stories these girls could tell you, the sick, twisted control these
men held over their lives, like Heath's story, would make the most horrid science fiction look like a walk in the park.
Child sexual abuse is very real, the control these abusers hold over their victims is unbelievable to those that have never
experienced it.
